What is Body Composition Analysis?

Simply put, body composition analysis is a method of describing what the body is made of.  It is a method we use to help determine the proportion of fat tissue and non-fat tissue in your body.  From a wellness perspective this gives us a wealth of information including a more accurate assessment of fat mass, muscle mass, and body fat percentage.


Whether your goals are losing fat, gaining muscle, or just getting healthier; looking at your pounds on a scale or calculating your BMI is just not enough.  They can't give you a calculation of your body fat percentage to help you reach your goals of a healthier you. 

A Modern Health Assessment

Body composition analysis with the InBody 270 uses non-invasive bioelectrical impedance analysis to evaluate weight, skeletal muscle mass, and percent body fat. 

Because it is more important to look at fat composition than weight.  The greatest health risk to a person is not weighing too much, it is too much fat. Obesity is a disease of too much fat accumulating in the body.  Problems such as hypertension, elevated blood lipids (fats and cholesterol), diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, respiratory dysfunction, gallbladder disease, cancer, and a myriad of other health problems are all related to obesity.

Why do we need to look at body composition?

The InBody 270 provides data that can be used in helping you to attain and understand your health, fitness, and weight loss goals.  The first step starts towards reaching your goal begins with understanding where your body is and defining where you need to be.    

Why not just look at BMI and my weight?

There are many ways to look at ones level of fitness and to evaluate to see if your weight is a healthy weight, overweight, or obese.  Stepping on your scale is one way.  Another method is to calculate one's BMI.

BMI stands for Body Mass Index, and it is an easy calculation based upon weight and height that can place you in a category of underweight, normal weight, overweight, obese, or morbidly obese. 


BMI is a simple calculation that physicians across the world use to assess risk of many diseases including diabetes, heart diseases, and cancer.  However, it has some important limitations. 

The primary limitation is that BMI does not distinguish fat from muscle.  Many people with a sedentary lifestyle may have a normal BMI, but have a high body fat percentage.  Men with muscular physiques may have a high BMI but a very healthy body fat percentage.  An assessment of body fat percentage provides a much more accurate assessment of health risk.

BMI is a simple calculation based on height and weight and does not take gender into account.  This is another limitation of BMI in that what is a normal percentage of body fat is different among men and women.  Women tend to have a higher percent body fat then do men, and any calculation assessing body composition needs to take that difference into consideration.
